Sclerotherapy is an injection technique used to remove small unwanted veins from the legs. At Derrow Dermatology in Orlando, we use an injected prescription medication called Asclera® for sclerotherapy to treat uncomplicated spider veins and small varicose veins.
How Does Sclerotherapy Work?
When Asclera® is injected into the unwanted vein, it works to damage the endothelium cells that line the vein. The body’s natural response is to send blood platelets to the site effectively causing the vein to clot, which seals it off. Once the vein is sealed, the body will work to metabolize the vein and replace it with healthy skin tissue.

Am I a Good Candidate for Sclerotherapy?
You may be a good fit for sclerotherapy if you’re bothered by dark blue, purple, or red spider veins on the legs. Ideal candidates for sclerotherapy procedures are otherwise healthy adults between the ages of 30-60. Patients should have realistic expectations about what the procedure can do for them.
Sclerotherapy is not a good option for patients with bulging and/or painful varicosities or patients that are pregnant, nursing, or have a history of blood clots. Dr. Witt will perform an evaluation and talk to you about your concerns before determining your candidacy for sclerotherapy with Asclera®.
How Long Does a Typical Treatment Take?*
Depending on how many veins you need to treat, your session may last anywhere from 5 minutes to a half hour. Typically, you’ll have one injection per inch of vein, with multiple injections in a single session. Patients typically need at least 2-3 round of treatments spaced out 4-6 weeks apart in order to see optimal results.
What Results Will I See?*
Sclerotherapy is a process that requires a chemical reaction to be effective. Patients can expect their veins to gradually fade in about 3-6 weeks. Final results from sclerotherapy can take upwards of 6 months. Multiple treatments are often needed to get the results you want.
Once an existing vein is metabolized, it’s unable to reform. However, sclerotherapy cannot prevent new veins from emerging. Touch-up treatments may be needed down the line to maintain your vein-free legs.

Is There Any Downtime?
There is minimal downtime associated with sclerotherapy. Many patients return to their normal routines immediately following treatment. After your sclerotherapy treatment, you’ll need to wear compression stockings or hosiery around the clock for 2-3 days. Dr. Witt may suggest wearing it during the daytime for another two to three weeks, depending on what type and how many veins you’ve had treated.
