Pediatric Molluscum Treatment

Treatment for Pediatric Molluscum Contagiosum

Pediatric molluscum is a skin infection caused by a virus called Molluscum contagiosum. As you’ve probably guessed from the name, it’s contagious. The symptoms of pediatric molluscum are round, raised bumps. They usually have a little indentation on the top, and range in size from a pinhead to pencil eraser. Normally, these bumps are flesh-colored, but they can be red and inflamed, and they most often appear on the face or neck, arms or armpits, or the tops of hands.

Unfortunately, pediatric molluscum is fairly easy to transmit because the bumps may become itchy, and they’re very easy to tear open. Others can contract the virus by coming into contact with personal items like towels or clothing from an infected child, or from faucet handles or furniture that have come into contact with the virus. Children can also spread the infection over their own bodies accidentally and can develop into conjunctivitis (pink eye) if they get it in on their eyelids or in their eyes.

If you suspect your child has pediatric molluscum, get them in to see a dermatologist as soon as possible for medical diagnosis and treatment. The bumps will go away on their own in six to twelve months, but given that the infection is contagious, it’s best to get treatment in most cases. Treatment options include topical medications or removal by scraping, freezing, or laser. The good news is that once the bumps are cleared, the infection doesn’t stay in the body, so you don’t need to expect additional outbreaks unless your child is re-exposed.
